KSI Interviewed by NFL Network During Study on Hand Cooling In Football Players

As summer quickly approaches and coaches and players are getting ready to start training in the heat, it is critical to keep the internal body temperature from reaching high levels during training and competition. Keeping with new advances in technology to keep athletes cool, the KSI Elite Athlete Performance Team set out to look at a new product that claims to do just that. During their testing they were visited by the NFL Network and were interviewed during their data collection on a hand-cooling device CoreControl RTXTM by Avacore Technologies. The device was developed in Stanford and has appeared on the sidelines of the San Francisco 49ers during competition to help keep players cool during exercise in the heat.

How The Device Works:

The CoreControl RTXTM or rapid thermal exchange device works by circulating cool water into a chamber around the hand while slight suction is applied to the chamber. A firm seal is achieved at the wrist using a specialized rubber and has been found to extract heat from the palm.

The Hand Cooling Study or (HCOOL):

The KSI Performance Team decided to examine the effectiveness of the CoreControl RTXTM on reducing core body temperature during exercise while wearing football equipment in the heat. Subjects exercised for 90 minutes while wearing full american football uniforms with breaks every 12 minutes in 103˚F, 40% humidity. They performed the exercise in three conditions in a random order as follows: 1) Hand Cooling with Fluid 2) Hand Cooling only 3) Seated Rest. They also performed specific tasks related to football such as vertical jump, balance testing, reaction time, and sprinting tasks before and after each testing session. Results of this study are not yet complete but we are very interested to see the results and possibly help players keep cool before any heat illness becomes a problem.

The NFL Network interviews will aired on NFL Network June 21st! Check it out here!
